Welcome to Wilstead Primary School, we hope you enjoy looking through our website and welcome any feedback you have. The Website will have content added regularly over the coming weeks so keep checking back.
Literacy
At Wilstead School we follow the ReadWrite Inc scheme for phonics, reading and writing. Children are taught the different sounds in a fun and engaging way using our Fred Frog puppet. They then learn to put these sounds together to make and read words.
Children will work in smaller phonics groups, allowing for their individual learning needs to be met. Once children know their first 16 sounds they will take home reading books to practice at home. Although Literacy is explicitly taught, the whole EYFS setting is set up to encourage reading and writing in all areas, providing the children with a real purpose to learn these skills.
We have a separate section on ReadWrite Inc within our Literacy pages.
Mathematics
At Wilstead School we follow the White Rose scheme for maths. This scheme allows the children to learn key mathematical skills such as subitising. Children learn to have a deep understanding of number, developing the skills they need to continue their learning into the Key Stage 1 curriculum. You can learn more about White Rose in our Maths section.
Understanding the World
Children at Wilstead School have the opportunity to learn all about other communities and cultures. Through our topics, the children are taught about a range of religious and cultural festivals and observations such as Diwali, Remembrance, Christmas, Chinese New Year and Easter. As a school we also teach the children the core values of Democracy, Tolerance, Liberty, Respect, Responsibility and Law. Religious Education is also taught in Reception and children learn about a range of different religions and beliefs.
Expressive Arts and Design
Children are actively encouraged to explore and create within the EYFS. Children will have access to a range of materials for them to allow their imagination to take them to places we can’t even begin to think of! Adults will be there to support them in their learning and problem solving is always encouraged.
