Prime Areas of Learning

Communication and Language

  • Listening, attention and understanding
  • Speaking

This area is assessed as soon as the children come to school using the formal Reception baseline and also the WELLCOMM assessment. This allows us to identify if your child may need additional support in developing these skills. Children requiring extra support will be given this through both individualised interventions and throughout class interactions.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

  • Self regulation
  • Managing self
  • Building relationships

This area of the curriculum is developed through our interactions and is often taught through experiences the children have. At Wilstead School we follow a relational approach to behaviour, where children are taught to build up a bank of strategies to encourage resilience and positive social skills.  Mistakes are seen as a learning opportunity and children are guided to make positive choices. See our Behaviour Policy for more details of this.

Physical Development

  • Fine Motor
  • Gross Motor

Children have the chance to explore and develop their fine and gross motor skills within both the indoor and outdoor environment. They  have access to a range of resources to develop the fine motor skills needed for writing, and also have access to our Forest School and outdoor area to develop the bigger gross motor skills. Children have 2 PE sessions a week (aside from the first half term where the children are settling into their own smaller environment).
